Importance of Well-Child and Well-Baby Visits

Your child will go through many changes in the early years of their life. As a parent, you need all the help you can get to better understand what your child is going through physically and emotionally. Well-child and well-baby visits allow pediatricians to evaluate the growth and development of your child and catch potential health issues that need a closer look. According to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), every child needs at least six well-child checkups from birth to 15 months of age. Here’s the recommended schedule:

  • By 1 month
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years
  • 2 1/2 years
  • 3 years
  • Each year after that until age 21

Well-child visits include:

Physical Exam

A  thorough physical exam involves checking your child’s head, ears, eyes, mouth, respiratory and circulatory systems, reflexes, and temperature. As a parent or guardian, this becomes the perfect time to have your questions answered, air concerns, and share observations about your child – something especially helpful for first-time parents. A physical exam can also detect signs and symptoms of illnesses that require medical care.

Immunizations

Children should be vaccinated to protect them against preventable diseases such as measles, mumps, and other ailments that can result in hospitalization, disability, or death. Immunization has saved millions of lives and continues to keep the community safe from the outbreak of diseases.  Your doctor will give you an immunization or vaccine schedule as a part of your well-baby visits.

Assessing developmental milestones

Well-baby visits track not only physical changes, they also allow your doctor to gauge the developmental milestones of your child. These include behaviors and skills like rolling over, crawling, and walking. Not all babies develop at the same pace. But pediatricians can order a more thorough examination to determine if the child needs further development services like physical therapy, speech therapy, and the like.

Getting age-specific and valuable advice

After exams and assessments, your doctor will give you age-specific advice on how to nurture your child’s learning and development. In addition to well-baby and well-child checkups, you can visit our low-income health clinic for any of the following services:

  • Immunizations and free vaccine programs
  • Hearing, vision, and dental screenings
  • School physicals
  • Pediatric weight management
  • Pediatric dental services and fluoride treatments
